BOCCONI STUDENT INTERACTIVE JOURNEY MAP

Unified access to university services and information.
How can an interactive journey map support the experience of students and staff?

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION SERVICE DESIGN STUDENT CENTRICITY

Universities and academic institutions are undergoing a profound transformation: they are now expected to offer integrated and personalized digital experiences that align with the expectations of students increasingly accustomed to fast, seamless, and intuitive interactions.

Bocconi University, in collaboration with BSD, launched a co-design initiative that actively engaged both students and staff, with the aim of building a new informational and relational ecosystem that enhances every moment of the university experience.

A new vision for academic services.

Bocconi University addressed common challenges in the education sector—such as fragmented services, scattered information, and limited user engagement—by adopting a Human-Centered Design approach. BSD, working closely with the university’s Digital Transformation Team, led a structured research and co-design process involving over 500 participants, including students and staff.

Through workshops, interviews, and surveys, the project gathered needs, expectations, and insights that helped redefine key phases of the student experience. These were then visualized in a Journey Map, first prototyped on paper and validated in real-world contexts.

From prototype to digital: toward an interactive experience.

The value of the insights gathered led to the development of a digital and interactive version of the Journey Map—an innovative tool not only for communicating services but also for enabling ongoing dialogue with the university community.

Through brainstorming and concept generation activities, BSD designed an intuitive and dynamic interface that allows users to explore the student experience in both a consultative and interactive way. Custom filters, active feedback, and differentiated content by user type (e.g., students, alumni, staff) make the map a living, evolving tool that aligns seamlessly with the university’s digital touchpoints.

An internationally recognized project.

The Bocconi Student Interactive Journey Map received the iF Design Award 2025 in the Service Design category—one of the world’s most prestigious awards for excellence in design.

The award acknowledged the project’s innovative value in transforming the traditional Journey Map into a participatory digital ecosystem that evolves through user contributions and enhances the student experience at every stage.

With this recognition, Bocconi University strengthens its position as a forward-thinking institution in the digital transformation of educational services, while BSD celebrates its second iF Design Award in five years—further proof of the quality and impact of Italian service design on the global stage.
