Redesign of the HMI of a vehicle diagnostic tool.
How to propose an innovative and Corporate Identity-consistent Interface?

HUMAN-MACHINE INTERFACE UX/UI DESIGN AUTOMOTIVE

In the automotive realm, vehicle diagnostic tools have evolved into indispensable instruments for mechanics and workshops.
These tools enable the precise analysis of malfunctions, breakdowns, or errors within vehicles' electronic systems, streamlining the work of professionals and ensuring swift and effective repairs.

By harnessing diagnostic tools, users can pinpoint the root cause of an issue by extracting data from the vehicle's ECU (Electronic Control Unit) and monitoring crucial parameters in real-time, such as battery voltage or engine temperature.

These tools demand specialized expertise, hence their operation is reserved for professional mechanics and automotive technicians.

Provide an intuitive and modern tool that can effectively support work within the workshop.

MAHLE, a global leader in the automotive industry, has entrusted BSD with the UX/UI redesign of the TechPRO® 2 application, a diagnostic tool for mechanics and workshops. The landscape of diagnostic tools is constantly evolving, with the introduction of increasingly innovative technologies and advanced functionalities. Among the main trends, remote diagnostic solutions stand out, allowing professional operators to benefit from remote support services, as well as solutions for the calibration of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

In this context, attention to an effective and intuitive user experience (UX) becomes paramount for the success of any diagnostic tool. Additionally, there is a growing expectation among these stakeholders for interfaces and interaction mechanisms based on gestures, typically associated with the digital world experienced daily through their devices.

An interface based on proportions and consistency.

BSD's team was tasked with crafting a design that stood out from the competition in terms of innovation and usability, while adhering to MAHLE's visual identity.

The project's initial phase was dedicated to research and analysis, encompassing interviews with key project stakeholders, benchmarking activities, and domain analysis, including an evaluation of the client's existing solution.
This exploratory phase laid the foundation for a comprehensive knowledge base upon which the design process would be built.

A visual style that evokes the MAHLE brand through shapes and colors.

The design process began with the definition of a new functional logical model, which optimized the organization of information and functionalities within the application. New features were also introduced, based on user feedback and the latest industry trends. The design phase was characterized by continuous iterative validations with the client, which allowed for valuable feedback to be gathered and the design to be refined to meet MAHLE's specific needs.

The visual style of the new TechPRO® 2 was designed to reflect the brand's values. A layout composed of modules and colors in shades of blue, consistent with the brand's visual identity, creates a clean, modern, and professional interface. The project was also adapted to the BRAIN BEE (CONNEX 2 Tool) identity, adopting its colors. BSD also designed an ad hoc icon system, capable of emphasizing the brand's characteristics, ensuring greater aesthetic consistency within the application, and contributing to improving the overall user experience by facilitating the understanding of concepts.
